FILM REVIEW: American Ultra

Stoner sweethearts Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) and Phoebe (Kristen Stewart) live in an unassuming American small town going about their day-to-day business, that is until general store clerk Mike is turned into a highly trained killing machine.

Unbeknown to him, the long haired anxiety riddled protagonist is actually a sleeper agent for the CIA who is order to be killed before he is activated and kills a guy with a spoon.

The whole Pineapple Express meets The Bourne Identity thing is a bit of a scramble of a story line, and seeing Topher Grace chasing a massive stoner just shouts irony.

That being said, Eisenberg being his seamless dry witted self, does give the film and edge of integrity, and for once Stewart is actually quite enjoyable to watch.

For a film that is meant to be a comedy the laughs aren’t always so apparent – the biggest laugh was literally right at the end of the film – there is something about American Ultra that keeps the audiences attention throughout.

Even though it may not be an instant classing, you can see Nima Nourizadeh’s film becoming a bit of a cult classic.
